Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
GTS Physical Therapy is proud to offer instrumental swallow studies right here in Mountain Home, one of the few clinics in the region providing this specialized evaluation. If eating or drinking has started to feel difficult or unsafe, our team can help you find out why and build a personalized plan to move forward.
What Is a Swallow Study?
A Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, or FEES, is a safe, in-office procedure that gives our clinicians a direct look at how your swallow is working.
During the evaluation, a small flexible camera is passed gently through the nose while you try a series of selected foods and liquids. This allows our speech-language pathologist to see, in real time, how well the throat is protecting the airway, whether food or liquid is left behind after a swallow, and how food and liquid move through the throat. Those findings guide an individualized care plan built around your specific needs.
Signs You May Benefit From a Swallow Evaluation
Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) doesn’t always look the same for everyone. Consider scheduling an evaluation if you or a loved one experience:
- Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
- A feeling that food or pills are getting stuck
- A wet or gurgly-sounding voice after swallowing
- Meals that are taking longer than they used to
Catching these signs early can help prevent complications like aspiration, dehydration, or malnutrition — and can make mealtimes feel safe and enjoyable again.
